The significant horns on the Zimmer were not operational.  After fixing them, I modified the controls so I could operate them from the Nardi wheel!                                                                                      This is a Zimmer mod. First, the idea is to use paddles to operate the horns.  However, turning the wheel will clash additional cables, so I designed a set of wireless paddles. The paddles, I designed and printed on my 3D printer. I designed them to contain a 'remote' from a cheap Ali-express remote relais set.  The left paddle operates one relay, the richt paddle operates another.  The tension of the remote buttons is enough to push the paddle back after usage. The receiver will be mounted under the hood, close to the power lines to the compressors. So wireless paddles can not interfere with the steering function. https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOFNPSSYOrjnsndNvI1jB7a1igb5ydxWNKnU_Pr Be advised, I re-tube the horns, so one compressor is for

The Zimmer polo

The Zimmer Golden Spirit logo is a beautiful logo, but hard to get. There is no official merchandise any more.  Still, we want those logo's on everything we can think of :-)  (This is a Zimmer mod :-) )  Having said this, I talked to my brother and sister in law. The first being my brother, the last having a professional sewing and broidery history.  I pointed them to the best logo I could find on the internet and my brother imported it in some very expensive software, added every possible stitch he could determine and after that they sent it to the intelligent broidery machine of his wife.  This came out ! The next challenge was to change this piece of cloth in a way that it would fit on a standard men's polo. I decided to make a small bag of it. Finally I sewed it onto the polo and yes.. he is a distinguished gentlemen now.. ME !

Battery replacement

The battery of the Zimmer has been a puzzle over the years. Some have it under the driver side fender, some in the trunk. Ours is in the trunk (This is a Zimmer mod) Of course it does not really matter where the battery is located. But I thought it was a very dangerous situation. When I bought the Zimmer, it came with a new battery, but the technician had one mounted with the poles below the steel trunk support of the original Mustang. If you take a close look, the PLUS pole is located less than a mm from the steel body part. And having only a strap to secure the battery to the bottom of the trunk, it is reasonable to expect an explosion when we hit a bump and the battery jumps just one millimeter.  So first thing I did was to put some self made insulation between PLUS and Body. This gave me some safe feelings while driving, but it was not the final solution.  Also, the ground cable was not even 1/3 of the diameter of the mains. Funny this, what goes out, must come back in yes ? So I

Trunk spring removal

End of summer, we will have the Zimmer converted to run on LPG.  In The Netherlands that is often done for cars that like to consume a lot of fuel :-) (This is a Zimmer mod.) When running on LPG, there must be an LPG tank. In our plans, there will be 4! First a long small tank under the parcel shelf, However that is not enough LPG for some distance, so we will have the original fuel tank removed, the spare wheel in the trunk removed, the bottom of trunk removed and a 2nd LPG tank installed at the spare wheel space, down to the original tank depth. Unfortunately, the trunk lid is supported by 2 torsion springs. They run from left to right and vise versa.  They will be in the way of the biggest tank under the shelf, so I decided to take them out.  You can lift the spring out of the adjustment clamps at either side and than take them out easy, but you need to support the lid. It is approx 15 kilo's.   I made a temporary bracer that hinges in the padding and supports the lid at the lid

Washer system leakage

Our Zimmer lost it's washer fluid within 2 days, but we found no liquid under the car. So I decided to dismantle the system for checks. (This is a Zimmer mod). Below the multi purpose tank. The deepest part is for the coolant overflow, the other for the washer fluid. That one has the built-in pump. This is the test setting, just to see where it was leaking. It was not! Next was to follow the tubes from the pump to the washer nozzle. (There is only one dual nozzle on the Zimmer) I discovers that not so far from the pump0, there was a tube diameter change. It was facilitated by a plastic thingy that had the correct diameters at both ends. And guess:  while I took it out, it pulverized in my hand. That must have been the leaky part. I could not recreate the adapter, but found a piece of flexible tubbing that fitted the pump and also was able to fit over the other tube tightly. So no connector needed, just slide the original tube in the new part.  And now... my washer fluid stays on

Old Timer, New Timer !

No, it is not that I am buying a newer car. It is about time!  The Zimmer has a digital clock that is hidden behind the transmission lever while driving, so.... (This is a Mustang Mod) Our Zimmer, based on the "83 Mustang GT has the famous NARDI steering wheel. And if you are familiar with that, you have noticed the hub with the 3 part cover. If you pry out the little black lid, the black inner ring is open to access the steering bolt. The hole also is big enough to pull the hub cover off. (Pull hard. It is spring-fixed) Below the cover and the spring retaining system. Now you need to drill out the hole to receive a new timepiece, if you have one :-) I bought a Golden. battery operated car clock at Ali express. You'll find a few $3,- clocks if you search for " Car Dashboard Clock Air Vent" You can pull the air vent connector off and discard of.  So if your drilling is to the point, the clock will fit tight and can be pulled out for battery replacement. This is how i

Headlight Rewiring

Afbeelding
A Zimmer Golden Spirit is for most owners a pretty old car, lasting between approx. 50 and 30 years. Only the very rich among us can afford to have a new Zimmer build for them. And old cars suffer from : ... bad wiring ! (This is a Zimmer mod.) Our #620 sufferd great at the headlight section. One day we would have 2 dim lights, the other day we would have only one high beam. Or worse, no Dim but 2 High beam. Also the fog lights would or would not come up, not to speak of the city lights that might run on 1/25th of power on the right side and full on the left... .  So first I started to completely rewire the Dim/High beam for the H4 bulbs.    While diagnosing the problems, I noticed that all H4 wiring was running through the steering column, apparently, as there were no relays in the Mustang Service manual electrical diagrams. So I started designing a safe , fused and relayed circuit.  I used 2 relays,  Rel#1 gets its trigger from the main lights switch, if pulled in the 2nd position.
